A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
