The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
